Virginia 4-H: To Make The Best Better!

4-H is the youth development program of Virginia Cooperative Extension, an innitiative dating back to 1914 as a partnership between Virginia’s two land grant universities: Virginia Tech and Virginia State University

4-H is rich in experiences where young people partner with caring adults and volunteers to participate in a variety of activities in which they "learn by doing."  Youth ages 5-18 participate in Virginia 4-H.

The mission of 4-H is to assist youth, and adults working with those youth, to gain additional knowledge, life skills, and attitudes that will further their development as self-directing, contributing, and productive members of society.

Our vision is to create a world in which youth and adults learn, grow, and work together as catalysts for positive change.

James City County 4-H: About Today and Going Forward

James City County's 4-H program, under the leadership of Isaiah Morton, affectionately known as "Mr. M," who has been involved with 4-H for nearly a decade, embodies the spirit of growth and educational excellence. Mr. M's experience and dedication have been pivotal in steering JCC 4-H towards enriching educational experiences and fostering the development of skills among the youth.

The 4-H program in James City County offers a myriad of opportunities for young people to learn, grow, and become inspired. One of the standout features of the program is its focus on active engagement and hands-on learning. Through the Colonial Riders 4-H Horse Club, participants get a chance to delve deep into equestrian skills, coupled with the responsibilities of horse care and management, enriching their knowledge and nurturing a strong sense of responsibility and discipline.

Aspiring leaders have the chance to shine and develop their capabilities by serving as 4-H Teen Counselors for 4-H Junior Camp. This role not only enhances their leadership skills but also instills a profound sense of community and mentorship. Additionally, the MAKING WAVES 4-H Teen Leaders Club propels members into leadership roles through participation in local, state, and national events such as the 4-H Congress, where they engage with broader networks and participate in higher-level competitions and learning experiences.

Looking ahead, the James City County 4-H program is set to further expand its reach and impact. The planned revival of the JCC 4-H Archery Club by 2026 aims to offer new challenges and skill-building opportunities. Moreover, the expansion of outdoor educational programming and the reintroduction of 4-H initiatives into the academic public school environment, including projects like Embryology and Reality Store, will enhance the educational landscape significantly.

These initiatives are designed not only to make the children of our community mentally stronger and more physically aware but also smarter, wiser, and well-rounded. The comprehensive approach of James City County's 4-H program underscores the true essence of the 4-H motto, "To make the best better," ensuring that the potential for more is not just a possibility but a certainty.

In James City County, 4-H indeed Grows Here, cultivating a fertile ground for the youth to thrive academically, cognitively, and physically.
